Why is Home Renovation a Thing for Australians?

Painting the Kitchen - Renovation Kingdom

You’ve probably witnessed this craze at least once or twice in your neighbourhood. One of your neighbours may have overhauled their kitchen, another installed a freestanding bath in the bathroom, while a new homeowner spent thousands to upgrade their laundry area. What’s with this hot trend? Why is home renovation a thing for Australians?

Statistics Related to Home Renovation

Back in 2017, Renovation Kingdom conducted a survey with over a thousand respondents as to why they renovate their homes. These are the some of the noticeable results of the said study:

  • Close to a quarter of the respondents renovate for aesthetics
  • Majority of women are inclined to renovate for visual appeal while most men do it to add value to the property or improve their lifestyle
  • A lot of respondents within the age of 18-24 renovate with aesthetic appeal as their main goal

As you can see, the primary driving force for a lot of Australians has been upgrading for aesthetics above all else. And Renovation Kingdom is not alone in proving those findings.

The 2017 Houzz and Home survey, which had close to 10,000 Aussie respondents, also revealed the same. It showed that a whopping 74 percent of homeowners undergo home renovation with design and function in mind. The survey also revealed that the average renovation costs around $66,900, which is still a rather sizable amount!

But that’s not all. The study also shows that the most renovated area is the kitchen, with around a third of the average renovation cost being allocated for kitchen renovation. Following the kitchen was the living room, then the master bedroom, bathroom, and laundry.

Why the Obsession with Home Renovation?

You could say Aussies are some of the most passionate people when it comes to home renovation. Want proof? Just look at how home renovation TV shows have been massive hits.

Foxtel’s “Love It or List It Australia” attracted a huge audience for its debut episode, making it a success. Other home renovation shows like “Selling Houses Australia,” “The Block,” and “House Rules” continue to flourish after so many years. So in a way, you could say that the audience’s passion for home renovation and those shows are feeding off each other’s energy, and that’s not a bad thing!
